Antique Indian bride chest carved from solid wood. The damchiya was the traditional chest containing the dowry that the Indian bride took with her to her husband's home. It was made to order by the bride's family in preparation for the wedding. Each piece is therefore unique. This damchiya is special! It is overflowing with latus (which means spinning top in Hindi), the wooden tassels found on some damchiyas. Usually, there are one or four of them (beneath the carved horses), but here there are thirty! Another distinctive feature is the two large doors, whereas damchiyas often have much smaller doors. Finally, note the meticulous carving of the feet. An exceptional, rare, antique (over 80 years old), and practical piece! This is a vintage, second-hand item; signs of wear are present, which contribute to its unique character and charm.
