Superb Louis XVI-style sloping desk, crafted in the 19th century, in rosewood and mahogany marquetry. Its drop-leaf is adorned with a delicate floral decoration in light, stained wood marquetry, framed by an oval rosewood medallion, itself surrounded by mahogany leaves arranged like butterfly wings. This refined ensemble is enhanced with a discreet marquetry fillet, elegantly highlighting the contours of the decoration. The drop-leaf, fitted with a functional lock with a Louis XVI entrance topped with a ribbon, comes with its finely chiseled key. It reveals a carefully designed interior, composed of two small drawers with lentil knobs on either side, topped by a large central niche. An ingenious concealed mechanism provides access to a secret cache, cleverly hidden beneath a sliding plate. The drop-leaf is upholstered in new black leather, adorned with a gilded vignette and a central motif. The cabinet's apron features three drawers, the fronts of which are decorated with geometric marquetry alternating between rosewood and light wood in a vertical arrangement. The desk rests lightly on four sheathed legs, finished with brass feet. An exceptional piece, combining decorative refinement and ingenuity, a testament to 19th-century cabinetmaking expertise. ************* Period: Mid-19th century.
