Octagonal side table with mother-of-pearl and bone inlays, Anglo-Indian work. Hoshiarpur, India, circa 1880. Octagonal top covered with a rich marquetry decoration of leafy scrolls, rosettes, and star-shaped rosettes. Eight-sided openwork base forming arcades in Indo-Islamic style, entirely highlighted with inlaid fillets and geometric patterns. Dark wood (rosewood or teak), featuring refined Orientalist craftsmanship. This style of Moorish furniture was very popular in Europe during the second half of the 19th century, and many regions of Punjab in India produced similar pieces of remarkable quality. Comparable tables were sold by Liberty of London at the end of the 19th century. Height: 52 cm. Width: 51 cm. Depth: 51 cm. Satisfactory condition. An old expression crack running across the top, some missing inlays and fillets in places, preserved original patina. Trace of an (illegible) label on the underside of the top. A rare and ancient piece of craftsmanship.
