Low cabinet with one door made of elm wood, originating from the Chinese province of Shanxi and dated around 1930. A piece of domestic scale and traditional craftsmanship, halfway between a storage cabinet and a bedside table, representative of provincial furniture from northern China. The province of Shanxi was for centuries a prosperous region due to trade and banking, developing a recognisable furniture tradition: robust forms, low proportions, and a measured decorative vocabulary. Furniture like this was placed in the main room or next to the kang — the heated platform of northern homes — to store clothing, dishes, or everyday utensils. It is constructed from elm (yumu), a wood valued in northern China for its expressive grain and durability. The front door features a carved cartouche, the only ornamental gesture of the piece. The facade retains its original wrought iron ring and lock plate. The sides, made from panels joined by framing, enhance the sense of solidity. The entire piece is fully assembled using mortise and tenon joints, without nails. Details. Dimensions: Width: 64 cm Depth: 40 cm Height: 65 cm. Style: Chinese provincial furniture, rustic Shanxi style. Materials and techniques: Elm wood (yumu); traditional assembly using mortise and tenon joints; original wrought iron hardware. Place of origin: Shanxi, China. Period: Late Qing dynasty – Republican period. Date of manufacture: Circa 1930. Condition / Observations: Good. Retains its original patina with wear consistent with its age and use. Original hardware in place.
