Sculptural ceramic signed JG: a glazed stoneware soup tureen signed JG, made in Jacques Gretha's workshop in Macaye, in the Basque Country, during the 1970s. This piece stands out for its generous, almost spherical volume, highlighted by a strongly domed lid with a wide ring handle. The decoration, applied in relief in a bright orange on a speckled beige stoneware, animates the entire surface with free and spontaneous movements. The thick drips and gestural lines create a striking contrast with the sobriety of the clay, giving the whole a sculptural presence characteristic of 1970s studio ceramics. The two circular handles visually respond to the lid's handle and reinforce the balance of the shape. Beyond its primary function, this soup tureen resembles a true collector's piece, capable of occupying the centre of a table, sideboard, or bookshelf on its own. Jacques Gretha worked as a potter in Macaye for over half a century. His works, signed JG, reflect a personal approach focused on material, volume, and characterful glazes. In excellent vintage condition (see photos). Diameter 20 cm, width with handles 28 cm, total height 27 cm, height of the lid 13 cm, height of the container 14 cm. A strong piece where the softness of the stoneware and the energy of the orange decoration create a particularly vibrant graphic dialogue.
