Antique Art Deco Gouda Pottery Table Lamp, c. 1910-35, New Ochre Linen Shade

Beautiful hand-painted ceramic table lamp from Gouda, Netherlands from the Art Nouveau - Art Deco transition. Amitābha Studio has rewired it with a new socket and a fabric-wrapped cord, and paired it with a new custom ochre linen lampshade. The base is a tall trumpet of hand-painted earthenware under a matte glaze. Sprays of cobalt flowers rise over an ochre ground from a lower band of scrolling blue foliage, green panels and white-reserved palmettes, with a dotted border and a pale-blue band at the foot. The palmettes and the dotted border belong to the Art Deco side of the Gouda repertoire, while the flower sprays still carry something of the Dutch Art Nouveau that came before. Our attribution to Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) rests on the unique shape. The trumpet profile closely matches one of the factory's candlestick models. The date follows the glaze and the painting. PZH introduced its matte glaze around 1910, and by the mid-1930s the Depression had pushed the Gouda factories away from hand-painted art pottery toward plainer, cheaper wares. The conversion from candlestick to lamp appears to have been made early in the piece's life rather than recently. About Gouda Pottery: Gouda made clay tobacco pipes and everyday earthenware for centuries before Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland opened in 1898 and brought art pottery to the town. Its early high-gloss Art Nouveau wares gave way from about 1910 to matte-glazed polychrome decoration, and other Gouda firms took up the style. It became so closely tied to the town that collectors call it Gouda whichever factory made the piece.
