Inspired by the famous ancient statuettes of tanagra, this elegant draped female figure embodies the silent grace and refinement of hellenistic silhouettes. Modeled in terracotta, this 20 cm high sculpture is in keeping with the work of alexandre bigot (1862–1927), a great french art nouveau ceramist, particularly known for his architectural creations. The flowing drapery, with softly accentuated folds, recalls the aesthetic of the tanagraeans—those greek figurines from the 4th century bc that depicted veiled women in lively and light attitudes. Here, the simplified treatment of the facial features and volumes reinforces the modernity of the piece while retaining an ancient imprint. The terracotta has a slight green patina in the hollows, suggesting a possible archaeological influence, dear to bigot. The work is unsigned, but clearly reflects the spirit of late 19th or early 20th century productions. Good overall condition, with minimal signs of wear on the base.
