Biedermeier Box in Walnut Veneer on Maple, Austria, 1840s

Overview. Elegant Biedermeier casket box from Austria, circa 1840s. Clean rectangular proportions that showcase the walnut veneer. Construction. Walnut veneer over a solid maple substrate. Fitted lid closes flush with the case and sits on a low plinth base. Brass hinges, a central key escutcheon and an iron lock are fitted to the front. Features. Inset mirror glass in the lid (the mirror has reportedly been replaced at a later date). Visible evidence of former interior fittings inside the box, indicating its original use as a casket. Materials. Exterior walnut veneer with maple structural wood. Metal fittings in brass and iron; mirror glass. Dimensions. Width 29.7 cm — Depth 20 cm — Height 12 cm. Compact proportions suitable for display on a dressing table or shelf. Provenance. Made in Austria, circa 1840, in the Biedermeier tradition that favours fine veneers and restrained geometry.
