Antique wedding chest painted in pine – Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1841

This antique painted wedding chest made of pine is a trousseau chest from Central Europe – Austro-Hungarian Empire, featuring a painted landscape, neoclassical vases, and an inscription signed and dated 1841. It originates from Central Europe, from the Biedermeier period, where pine was painted in distemper on a turquoise green background. Around 1840, the peasant wedding chest assimilated the scholarly repertoire that circulated through prints: the profile of a neoclassical vase, the laurel garland, the framed landscape. What was considered cabinet painting in the city is here translated into distemper on board, with the same ambition of a painting. The case is made of solid pine on a moulded plinth with an arched cut. The lid features two framed panels and long palette wrought iron hinges. The sides retain iron handles for transport, and the lock entry is made of cast bronze, shaped like a six-lobed rosette. Details. Dimensions: Length 160 cm – Depth 72 cm – Height 76 cm.
