Laurent Marqueste (Toulouse 1848 - Paris 1920) Portrait of a Lawyer. Circa 1910. Bronze. H. 27 cm (30 cm with the base) Signed on the right shoulder: Marqueste. Founder: Claude Valsuani. Foundry mark on the back: Cire / C. VALSUANI / PERDUE Base in red marble. Hairline crack in the marble, restored. Portrait of a lawyer with an alert and intelligent face. In addition to his mythological and allegorical groups, such as the magnificent Perseus and the Gorgon, Laurent Marqueste specialised in bust portraits of notable personalities. Regarding this portrait of a lawyer, it is relevant to mention those of the composer Camille Saint-Saƫns (exhibited at the Philharmonie de Paris, Museum of Music) and the bust of surgeon Paul Poirier (in Granville, Lower Normandy), both cast in bronze by Claude Valsuani, just like the lawyer. As for the identity of our lawyer, it is believed to be a well-known legal figure from the early 19th century. This work by the great sculptor from Toulouse is unpublished.
