Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) was a French painter, ceramist, and creator, best known for completely renovating the art of tapestry in the 20th century. The title of the work: Carpe de Lune. This lithograph is part of the book ‘La Géographie Animale’ published in 1948. Constantly present in Lurçat's tapestries or graphic works, the fish appear in basins, mouths open towards the sky, suspended, in skewers, hanging from the branches of a tree, or flowing with the water. They can take on graphic forms without thickness, or appear iridescent in waves suspended defying gravity and landscape plausibility. They are carp, unspecified, or fierce piranhas after Lurçat's journey to South America. Lurçat expresses himself in beautiful illustrated books such as Géographie animale, Le bestiaire fabuleux, and Mes domaines, which include a large part of the poems from an imaginary bestiary featuring, for example: the moon carp, the Persian octopus, or the bull mermaid of Aden... These are animals that could have existed. It bears a signature at the bottom left. The lithograph retains its original frame, but the mount has been changed. A museum board has been placed on the back to prevent any potential foxing and pests. Lithograph on vellum paper. Dimensions visible: 27 cm height X 23 cm width. Overall dimensions: 42 cm height X 37 cm width. Ready to be hung.
