Gouda Pottery Table Lamps, Pair, Dutch Art Deco Floral, New Silk Shades

A matched pair of Gouda Art Deco table lamps from vases by Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, hand-painted in the Lucette pattern, one base dated 1926 and the other 1927. Fitted with new ivory pleated silk shades, new brass fittings, and fabric-wrapped cords. Newly wired without damaging the original ceramic. Height includes lampshades. The bases are full baluster forms, each one encircled by a bold stylized floral composition: oxblood red and yellow blooms against an ivory ground, an orange-glazed shoulder above, and a descending band of mottled teal foliage meeting a deep matte-black foot. Every element is edged in fine gold — a technique close in spirit to cloisonné, lending the matte surface a graphic, jewel-bright precision.That the two have stayed together is itself notable. One base has a small chip to the underside of the foot rim, barely perceptible in normal display. The underside of each base carries the full PZH marks: the Lazarus gate device, pattern name Lucette, model number 1562, a painter's monogram, year symbol, and Made in Holland. Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland was established in Gouda in 1898 and became one of the foremost Dutch art potteries of its era. Around 1909 the factory developed the distinctive matte glaze that underpins the Gouda aesthetic; through the following decade it combined that surface with the bold, flattened motifs of Art Deco. Exported widely to Britain and America as Gouda ware, the factory earned a Royal designation in 1930 and continued production into the 1960s. Its signed, dated studio pieces are among the most sought-after of the period.
