Oil on canvas. Mid-19th century. The large scene depicts an unidentified historical episode set during the Renaissance, in which an archbishop listens to the plea of an armed young man, accompanied by his mother, who supports his request. The setting is inside the reception hall of the high prelate, presumably in the episcopal palace, which overlooks the Cathedral from the loggia in the background, of which the dome is visible; the bishop is surrounded by his subordinates and guards, while various members of the public look on. Notably, there is the presence of a man seated in the foreground to the left, who looks towards the viewer and points to the scene, as if narrating it. The atmosphere plays on contrasts between light and shadow, between the bright colours of the dominant figures and the dull, diffuse tones of the surrounding figures, which literally tend to disappear into the shadows at the edges of the scene. The work is part of the vast production of the 19th century that drew on historical or literary subjects, reinterpreting them in a romantic key. The painting, restored and re-canvas, is presented in an important frame from the second half of the 19th century, with some losses.
