Grand, thin, and designed for canal houses An exceptionally tall and narrow 19th-century mirror with its beautifully preserved original glass and original paint, made in France. This rare-format wall mirror, dating from the mid to late 19th century, is known in Amsterdam as a "damspiegel," as these mirrors were traditionally placed between the windows of majestic canal houses. This piece is made in the elegant Louis XVI style and features a painted wood and plaster frame, gesso, and gilding on wood. The frame is sound, and the glass is still in very good condition (and heavy!). The mirror has a few very small spots, which are part of its authentic appearance and charm. This mirror was originally designed as a fireplace mirror for a narrow fireplace but works perfectly as a wall mirror or floor-standing mirror due to its impressive height. Both highly decorative and practical, this antique mirror with its original patina is a remarkable addition to any interior, enhancing the charm of any room it adorns. Dimensions: H 195 cm x W 70 cm x D 5 cm Materials & techniques: Glass, gesso & wood Provenance: France Period: 19th Century Style: Louis XVI Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. Overall good condition, with usual wear, scratches, and small losses of gilding.
