"Comet" floor lamp by Ettore Sottsass for Design Centre, c. 1970

Italian work, 1970. H 204 X W 36.5 X D 36.5 cm. Lacquered aluminium, chrome-plated brass and plexiglass. Good condition. Wavy plexiglass lampshade set on a geometric base of black lacquered aluminium, silhouette resembling a stylised comet. Designed by Sottsass in 1970 for the "Mobili Grigi" series, produced by Design Centre — a piece of radical Italian design that rejects modernist sobriety in favour of playful and sculptural forms. Model also known as "Cometa", now sought after in its original edition.
