Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair for Fritz Hansen

Condition: An early original example from the 1960s, featuring a cross base. The piece is in excellent condition. Arne Jacobsen was one of the most significant Danish architects and designers of the 20th century. His works are an essential component of modernism and are displayed in numerous museums around the world. The young Arne Jacobsen initially trained as a stonemason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. It was at this same institution that Jacobsen — forced to flee to Sweden during World War II due to his Jewish heritage — was appointed professor in 1956. During this period, he intensified his work as a designer. He created classics such as "The Ant," "The Egg," "The Swan," "Grand Prix," and "Series 7," all icons of modernism. It is also from this time that the "AJ" cutlery range originates, chosen by Stanley Kubrick for his cult film *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968). Arne Jacobsen designed the "Swan" chair in 1958 for the reception area of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. This model was revolutionary for its time, as it was conceived without angles or edges.
