Swan Chair by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen

An original very old model dating from the 1960s, featuring a cross base and a height adjustment mechanism, a very rare characteristic. It has retained its original cognac leather upholstery. The foam has hardened in places and two small damaged areas of the upholstery have been repaired. Otherwise, the seat shows a marked patina. Description. Arne Jacobsen was one of the most significant Danish architects and designers of the 20th century. His work is a cornerstone of modernism and is exhibited in many museums around the world. Young Arne Jacobsen initially trained as a stonemason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. It was there that Jacobsen — forced to seek refuge in Sweden during World War II due to his Jewish heritage — was appointed professor in 1964. During this time, he intensified his work as a designer. He created classics such as "The Ant, " "The Egg, " "The Swan, " "Grand Prix, " and "Series 7, " all icons of modernism. It was also during this period that the "AJ" cutlery range was designed, chosen by Stanley Kubrick for his cult film of 1968, *2001: A Space Odyssey*. Arne Jacobsen designed the "The Swan" armchair in 1958 for the reception area of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. This design was revolutionary for its time, as it was created without any sharp angles or edges.
