Two-seater sofa and Cornaro armchair by Carlo Scarpa, Simon Gavina, 1973. Designed in 1973 by Carlo Scarpa for Gavina (later Simon), the Cornaro series is one of the architect's most significant contributions to modern furniture. Scarpa was celebrated not only as an architect but also as a master of detail, proportions, and materials. The Cornaro exemplifies this perfectly: it has an architectural presence while remaining generous in comfort. The structures are made of solid, dark, and rich iroko wood, with beautiful grain still visible. The construction is minimal, almost reduced to the essentials, but the proportions are finely studied. Thick, rounded beams provide strength and definition without heaviness. The wood of all pieces in this set is in excellent condition, with only slight signs of use. Iroko is solid. Upon closely examining the photos, you will also notice a small touch very characteristic of Scarpa: the visible leather strap that runs through the structure. Everything is present and in place, adding a handcrafted honesty to the design. It also introduces a third material alongside wood and fabric — much like finishing an outfit with a belt. This mix of textures is what makes the Cornaro complete, architectural, and at the same time playful. The upholstery is still original and features panel seams that give the cushions their distinctive rhythm. The seams are intact, but the green fabric has reached the end of its life. It can no longer hold up for use and needs to be replaced, which is why we can offer the set at this price. Once reupholstered, the same sewing technique can be applied again, requiring additional craftsmanship but preserving the sculptural quality intended by Scarpa. Once reupholstered, the seams can be recreated in the same way as originally. This requires a bit more work and skill than standard upholstery, but it is precisely what gives the Cornaro its sculptural appearance. Any local upholsterer should be able to do this since this technique is quite common; it just requires extra work. Available pieces: – One armchair and one two-seater, both structurally excellent, needing new upholstery. For sale in this lot. – An additional armchair, also solid, also ready to be reupholstered.
