Cabinet desk - mahogany Victorian pedestal desk England 19th century

Authentic and elegant English pedestal desk from the Victorian era (second half of the 19th century) of fine craftsmanship and very attractive presence. Remarkable for the accuracy of its proportions, the brilliance of its flame mahogany, and the simplicity of its design, this desk exudes a characterful presence. Constructed from solid wood, with flame mahogany veneer, drawers and top made of solid mahogany. The top is covered with an old red leather, now beautifully patinated, adorned with a gold-finished border. It opens with nine drawers: three in the waist and three in each pedestal, all fitted with lock entries and brass ring handles. The handles are old replacements; the marks of the original fittings remain visible inside the drawers. The lock on the central drawer bears the mark “Chubb's Patent, London, Maker to Her Majesty”, with the number 719068. The other locks are in working order with the same key; only the lock on the central drawer is not functional. There are eight bronze casters marked “Clarke Loach Patent”, in good working condition. The casters can be removed upon request. The two pedestals rest on moulded bases. The whole can be disassembled into three parts (top, left pedestal, right pedestal) according to English tradition. Condition: Generally good used condition. A few minor accidents and wear to the veneer, consistent with age. On the right pedestal, slight old lifting of the crosspieces has caused small localized cracks in the veneer. There are shrinkage cracks in the wood inside the pedestals, not visible in use. The back shows a slightly uneven patina due to previous sun exposure. The desk has been checked by a cabinetmaker, treated against wood-boring insects, and is ready to be installed.
