19th century painting: LETOURNELLE. Portrait of a schoolboy in uniform. Oil on canvas signed lower right. On the back, we find the following inscription, in beautiful handwriting: 1862 - 15 years old. Touching portrait of this boy with an enigmatic and penetrating gaze. He wears his school uniform with golden palmettes on the collar and beautiful brass buttons. An elegant haircut and a military bearing give this beautifully crafted portrait a very solemn appearance. Original frame in wood and gilded stucco, punctuated with 4 rosettes and bordered by friezes. In excellent condition. The canvas has suffered a little more: traces of wear, lack of paint and several transparencies visible especially when it is taken down from the wall. Can be relined and restored but personally, I find these paintings much more touching when they thus bear the stigmata of their history. H: 66 cm. W: 56 cm. Thickness: 4/5 cm.
