A postmodernist vase from the 1960s, most likely originating from one of the renowned East German VEB manufactories, represents a synthesis of experimentation and precision characteristic of post-war modernism at the end of the decade. Made of double-layered glass: absolutely clear crystal on the outside, intense emerald green on the inside. The form is built by the rhythm of wide, geometric rings surrounding the body, creating a terraced, highly varied shape with a strong contrast between transparent and coloured layers. The cylindrical base gently transitions into a wide, bevelled rim, creating a multi-faceted effect and showcasing the play of refracted light. The surface is perfectly smooth, and the transitions between colours are extremely precise: a sign of the highest quality glass craftsmanship of the 1960s. Collector's condition, with no damage or visible signs of use, preserved exceptionally well. The vase's form carries the experiment of an era where modernist rigour met the emerging irony of postmodernism. Through the layered glass, the energy of the years when form followed function, yet allowed for a touch of architectural play, shines through. The green band creates an almost optical illusion of depth, and the regular terracing harmonises with the coolness of the clear crystal, telling of a time when industrial precision enabled experimentation with colour and light. The vase could whisper: 'Do not fear contrasts – I am a testament to a time when designers sought a compromise between logic and play.' It can be placed against a light, minimalist shelf in the living room, allowing light to freely pass through the glass layers and bring out optical effects. The vase will fit well in both mid-century modern and eclectic arrangements: it can be combined with geometric graphics, ceramics in neutral colours, or paired with other glass vessels of contrasting form. Surrounded by natural greenery or single, slender flowers, it will highlight the sculptural qualities of the form and add depth to the space.
