Optical vase, mid-century modern, transparent glass, designed by J. Drost, Ząbkowice, Poland, 1970s

The Optical Vase, designed by Jan Drost in the 1970s for the Ząbkowice Glassworks, is an example of Polish industrial design from the heyday of modernism. Made of pressed, transparent glass with an almost colourless, cool tone, the vase is distinguished by its cylindrical line and geometric, horizontal grooves running around the entire surface. The convex, wavy engravings give the vessel an effect of optical depth and dynamic light refraction, while the thick, stable base emphasises the utilitarian character of the design. The upper rim is flat and gently rounded, and the surface finish is mirror-like and crystalline. The glass shows no visible bubbles, chips or cracks. The condition is very good - with no signs of repair or damage. The form of this vase speaks the language of modernist fascination with light and technology - the geometric rhythm of the grooves reflects the spirit of the 1970s, when glass became a fully-fledged artistic material. The transparency of the material captures and diffuses light, creating subtle drawings of reflections and shadows on the tabletop.
