This antique carved buffet made of fir wood features a façade with geometric carved panels, two central drawers, and carved rosettes on the side flanks. It originates from north-western China, dating from the end of the Qing dynasty, where fir was worked using a traditional mortise and tenon assembly. The Hexi corridor in north-western China has been a vital passage between central China and Central Asia for centuries. The domestic furniture of the region reflects this border position: traditional Chinese structures adorned with flat carvings featuring strong geometric patterns, distinct from the more figurative decorations of the southern provinces. This type of buffet with drawers and side rosettes is found in rural homes and small urban residences throughout the corridor. The body is constructed from solid fir. The façade combines two stacked drawers on the left, several reserved panels carved with diamonds and rosettes, and horizontal registers at the base. The sides feature carved rosettes with scalloped edges, and the base ends on a cut-out plinth. The drawer handles are circular brass. The assembly is traditional Chinese mortise and tenon, without screws. Details. Dimensions: Length 234 cm – Depth 40 cm – Height 70 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty. Materials and techniques: Solid fir; brass fittings; traditional Chinese mortise and tenon assembly; flat carving on the façade and carved rosettes on the sides. Place of origin: China. Period: End of the Qing dynasty / Early Republic. Date of manufacture: Circa 1930. Condition / Observations: Good. Original carving very well preserved with natural blonde patina. Wear consistent with age and use.
