This antique sideboard, carved from fir wood, comes from the far north-west of China and dates from the end of the Qing dynasty. The piece features a flat relief-carved front with five geometric panels and continuous friezes along its edges. It measures 272 cm long and 66 cm high, sitting midway between a chest and a low bench. Domestic furniture from north-west China combines continental Chinese tradition with Central Asian influence brought by the Silk Road. Antique sideboards and storage benches served as seating, storage platforms at the foot of the kang, and places for clothing and textiles. The repeated flat carving is a recognisable regional hallmark: nothing figurative, all dense geometry covering the surface. The body is constructed from solid fir, a softwood and resinous timber common in north-western China. The top surface is a continuous board, and the front is divided into five square panels in reserve, each carved with a distinct geometric pattern (parallel diamonds, scallops, zigzags). The peripheral friezes extend the decoration to the edges. The assembly is traditional Chinese with mortise and tenon joints, without screws. The carving reflects patient and meticulous craftsmanship. Each panel has been hollowed out with a chisel in a regular rhythm, leaving a three-dimensional texture that captures the low light. The dark patina of the wood has settled into the recesses of the relief, highlighting the design. On the most exposed areas—upper edges, corners—the wood has been polished by daily use to a warm tone. Details. Dimensions: Length 272 cm – Depth 45 cm – Height 66 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty.
