Franco Albini, pair of Luisa chairs, Italy, 1949 Designed by Franco Albini in 1949 and originally produced by Poggi, the Luisa chair is one of the most iconic works of post-war Italian design. It received the Compasso d’Oro in 1955 and is now part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Triennale di Milano. This set of two pieces is made of solid oak with a naturally patinated matte surface. The design is minimal and architectural without being rigid. The lines play slightly, with a sense of balance. An interesting detail can be found at the assembly of the armrests, where the vertical and horizontal pieces fit together in a stepped construction. The legs end with slightly thickened tips. They are upholstered in natural cotton fabric, as seen in the photos, and are in generally good condition. At the back, there are two small black metal triangles that secure the backrest to the frame. There is a resemblance to the post-war designs of René Gabriel: visible assemblies, oak construction, and a rational approach to form and function. Franco Albini worked alongside key figures like Gio Ponti and influenced a whole generation of Italian designers, including Paolo Buffa. Dimensions Width: 56 cm Height: 76 cm
