An old oil painting depicting the Holy Mother with the Child, known as the Miraculous Image of Innsbruck. Oil on canvas with pastel colours. Painted after a work by Lucas Cranach that is part of the altar of Innsbruck Cathedral. Framed with an antique wooden frame. Unsigned, Germany, Bavaria, early 18th century. Restoration on the upper left side. Oil paintings with religious context have a long history. Usually commissioned by the church, but since the 15th century also by private clients. Often used for the deeply rooted tradition of the domestic altar 'Herrgottswinkel' where families gather. The image of Mary is perhaps the most common representation in Christian art. The life and crucifixion of Jesus also hold a significant place in this artistic movement.
