This magnificent Napoleon III period pedestal perfectly embodies the 19th century's taste for precious ornamentation and exceptional cabinetmaking. Raised on four turned legs, each topped with a finely crafted brass finial, it displays a tall and majestic silhouette. The decorative top features a central pocket adorned with a painted portrait of Louis XVI against a deep blue background, a delicate tribute to the Ancien Régime. Surrounding it, on a background of darkened wood, are inlays of mother-of-pearl, brass, and thuya, creating graceful scrolls and stylised butterflies in a striking interplay of materials and light. A garland of beads encircles the pocket, adding a touch of preciousness. The whole piece is bordered by an openwork brass gallery that follows the curved lines of the top. The legs, with their classic elegance, support two stretchers, themselves framed by chiselled bars that enhance the ornamental character of the piece while ensuring its stability. These stretchers provide functional space while extending the decorative richness of the furniture. This pedestal, both a side table and a work of art, showcases the craftsmanship of the artisans of the Second Empire. ******** Period: Mid 19th century.
