Rare and authentic Japanese kuruma tansu from the Edo period to the early Meiji period (late 19th century), made of solid wood, originating from Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, a city historically recognised for the quality of its woodcraft and traditional tansu. This traditional Japanese furniture combines decorative character with generous storage. The upper section conceals, behind a removable front panel, two large full-width drawers, historically intended for storing kimonos and textiles. The lower section consists of sliding doors at the front. They open to a storage space that includes an interior drawer as well as several practical compartments. Kuruma tansu were designed to be moved quickly to protect belongings during the frequent fires of the Edo period. Their use was later regulated and then prohibited in cities, as they obstructed streets and hindered interventions, which explains their rarity today. This piece is one that has been genuinely used, showing a patina and signs of wear consistent with its age. Unlike the many reproductions from the 1960s intended for interior decoration, it possesses an authentic presence, construction, and charm. A very beautiful piece of antique craftsmanship, ideal as a sideboard or statement piece in a wabi-sabi, contemporary, brutalist, or eclectic interior. In good overall condition with signs of wear consistent with the age and nature of the piece.
