Old pine wood coffee table – China, around 1900

This antique low console table made of pine is a Chinese domestic table with a single plank top and circular-section legs. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where the pine was worked with a hatchet and assembled with mortise and tenon joints. Such tables occupied the centre of northern farms: they were used for kneading, eating, and completing daily work. It was not a decorative piece of furniture but a daily tool, and its wear is a direct reflection of this usage. The top is a single board of solid pine, with a sharp edge and irregular thickness, supported by cut-out consoles. The four legs, turned in circular section, slightly splay outwards and are braced at two heights, a solution that provides rigidity without a skirt. The surface has developed a dark and deep patina, with a wide open grain running across the top and concentrated black usage marks in the centre. The edges are rounded from friction. The wood shows honest wear, without repainting or filler. Its height of 62 cm places it between a console and a side table: it works well behind a sofa, in an entrance, or as a light desk. The dark patina calls for a light wall and complements wabi-sabi, rustic, and contemporary interiors.
