Old pine wood console – China, circa 1930

This antique pine console features a solid rectangular top on slanted legs reinforced by two horizontal crossbars on each side. It originates from northern China, dating from the end of the Qing dynasty, where pine was crafted using a traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The slanted leg console belongs to the vernacular style of northern Chinese furniture. It served as a kitchen support, a work table in domestic settings, or a console in a main room. The A-frame structure with double horizontal crossbars on each side is very stable and allows for significant loads; it was common in rural homes in northern China during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The body is constructed from solid pine. The top is a thick board, slightly rounded on the front and back edges from use. The legs extend at an open angle to the ground, directly tenoned into the top. Each side features a pair of horizontal crossbars, one high and one low, which stiffen the structure. The joinery is traditional Chinese mortise and tenon, without screws. The patina is a warm brown tone and clearly shows the grain of the pine. The surface of the top retains signs of use: utensil marks, darkening from handling, and slight impressions. The legs and crossbars exhibit a darker tone typical of pine exposed to the air of kitchens and work areas. The whole piece remains intact. Details.
