This antique pine coffee table is a Chinese salon table with a solid top resting on straight-section legs, joined by side stretchers with mortise and tenon joints. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where local pine was crafted using traditional mortise and tenon assembly. In Chinese domestic interiors, tables of this type were used on the kang or directly on the floor—for tea, meals, or reading—close to the ground, in a daily life conducted at a low height. Their simple and sturdy construction made them common furniture in rural homes in the north. The top is made of solid pine, mounted on a frame of legs joined by low stretchers. The assembly is done with mortise and tenon joints, without nails or modern glue, and the edges retain the marks of hand tool work. The structure is firm and maintains its balance when supported. The surface has developed a warm patina over time: the grain of the pine is visible beneath the wear, with knots, dark veins, and small signs of use that give the top a lively appearance. The colour ranges from honey to chestnut, more intense on the edges and contact areas. Due to its low height, it can be used as a coffee table, tea table, or low side table near a sofa or futon. It fits into wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic, and Asian-inspired interiors, where it adds a historical note and an honest wooden surface. Details.
