The designer: In his designs, Rob Parry experimented with new materials and techniques. He created a dining chair from perspex shaped to the human body (1947), a magazine rack from a single folded aluminium sheet (1947), an armchair with a movable back (1950), and a multifunctional, modular piece combining armchair, sofa, and bed (1959). His work was regularly exhibited at the Dutch entry for the Milan Triennale, where the PTT mailbox from 1957 won the silver prize. This innovative twin mailbox, designed by Rob Parry and Emile Truijen for PTT and produced by Philips in Eindhoven, became an icon of Dutch design and was part of the Dutch streetscape for nearly fifty years. The plastic mailbox was the first in the world to separate city mail from other mail. The design features primary red with a grey front on a metal frame. The PTT mailbox was in use from 1957 to 2006. The 3-seater sofa / daybed: Gelderland 3-seater sofa by Rob Parry can be transformed into a daybed by pulling the seat forward. Pushing the seat back converts it to a sofa. The sofa has an anthracite grey square frame. The metal frame is unrestored and shows very light signs of use, but the two solid armrests have been treated to restore their natural appearance. The armrests are made of solid Afromosia wood, each 4 cm thick, and are mounted to the seat. The sofa is fitted with Nosag (zigzag) springs for better seating comfort. The seat and backrest have new foam/polyether and have been reupholstered in fine woven ocean blue fabric. The seat and backrest are angled for optimal comfort. Condition: The sofa is in excellent condition, essentially as new, as it has been restored and reupholstered.
