Toilet cabinet

We have been restaurateurs and furniture dealers since 2005, carefully selecting and taking care of our pieces. No, this is not a railway chest of drawers! It was not used in train carriages. This is a toilet chest of drawers that was used in bourgeois homes. The opening mechanism is referred to as railway because the sliding system of the small runners that allow the lid to tilt resembles the operation of railway tracks, a significant innovation of the 19th century. This tilt had several uses; it prevented the lid from touching the wall to avoid damaging the precious mahogany veneer, and it also allowed light to be captured at will for looking in the mirror. Once closed, the lid concealed the toilet utensils. The chest of drawers is made of mahogany, with an interior worktop of veined white marble in good condition, where a basin for washing would have been placed; today, it can hold a small dish for keys or a comb for tidying up, for example, if the piece is located in an entrance or a bedroom. It features two large drawers and a cupboard with two doors, providing ample storage. The piece is mounted on original castors that still work but do not glide very well, which means the furniture does not move easily. The piece is in very good condition, having retained numerous signs of use; it has been thoroughly cleaned and the finish has been slightly refreshed.
