Central European commode with three washed pine drawers – Central Europe, circa 1900

Central European three-drawer commode in washed pine, made in Central Europe at the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. A balanced domestic piece, halfway between a bedroom chest and a high sideboard, representative of rural furniture from Central Europe in its most serene interpretation. In Central European homes at the turn of the century, the three-drawer commode was one of the most versatile pieces of domestic furniture: it found its place in bedrooms, dressing rooms, hallways, and dining rooms, offering a very practical proportion for storing linen and utensils. The clear appearance it presents after stripping the original paint makes it particularly appealing for contemporary interiors. It is constructed from solid pine with washed fronts and frame-and-panel sides. The three drawers are assembled with visible dovetail joints and retain their original circular knobs and brass lock entries. The carpentry is honest and robust, with visible mortise joints at the corners and slightly tapered square-section legs that lift the piece off the ground. Details.
