Biedermeier Chiffonier in Cherry Veneer, South Germany, 1830s

Title. Antique Biedermeier chiffonier in brown cherry veneer with iron hardware, South Germany, c.1830. Overview. Neoclassical, unadorned design that emphasises warm cherry veneer and clean geometric lines. Tall chest or weekly cabinet format suitable for hall, bedroom or living room storage. Materials. Blonde cherry veneer over spruce with iron locks and hardware. Ebonized drawer fronts provide a contrasting detail. Storage. Nine drawers in total: three small upper drawers and six larger lower drawers. Seven drawers are fitted to be lockable via original iron locks; central key escutcheon present. Design. Simple cornice top, matched veneer panels and short, slightly tapered legs reflect Biedermeier restraint. Minimal ornamentation; visual interest provided by the cherry figure and veneer matching.
