Period: 19th century. Edwin Hayes (1819-1904) Born in Bristol, Edwin Hayes spent much of his childhood in Dublin. Growing up near the city's bustling harbors, he developed a deep love for the sea and sought to experience it in all its splendor. A keen sailor in his youth, he used his skills to work as a cabin boy on a ship bound for America, and the grandeur of the Atlantic was revealed to him. It was undoubtedly this direct approach that allowed Edwin Hayes to create exceptional works, each canvas imbued with an atmosphere that only experience could evoke. For artists like Hayes, who harbored a true passion for the sea, it was this very inconsistency that provided an inexhaustible source of inspiration and subject matter. Despite a prolific career, each of Hayes's seascapes possesses a singular beauty, the shifting colors and whims of the weather traversing his canvases like clouds in the sky.
