His works are an integral part of modernism and are displayed in numerous museums around the world. The young Arne Jacobsen initially began an apprenticeship as a stonemason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. It was there — at this very institution — that Jacobsen, forced to flee to Sweden during World War II due to his Jewish heritage, was appointed professor in 1964. During this time, Jacobsen intensified his work as a designer. He created classics such as *The Ant*, *The Egg*, *The Swan*, *Grand Prix*, and the *Series 7* — all icons of modernism. This period also saw the creation of the *AJ* cutlery series, which Stanley Kubrick chose for his cult film of 1968, *2001: A Space Odyssey*.
