Marble specimen tablet. Typical Grand Tour object. Originating from Italy, circa 1800-1830. Made from various types of marble and gemstones including: Rosso Levanto, Giallo Sienna, Verde Alpi, Onyx, Crema Marfil, Granite, Rhodochrosite, Lapis Lazuli, Rosa Portugal, Rosso Verona, Verde Quatemala, Travertine, Imperial Porphyry, and Noir Belge. The Grand Tour (popular from the 17th to 20th century) was an extensive journey through Europe, mainly through France and Italy, made by young, wealthy aristocrats (often from Great Britain). Purpose of the trip: It was a conclusion of their education, aimed at gaining knowledge about art, culture, antiquity, and architecture, and social formation. Dimensions: 40H X 38W X 11D.
