Rare and highly sculptural Italian floor lamp designed by Carlo Nason for Mazzega, Italy, circa 1970s. An exceptional example of Italian Space Age lighting, the lamp combines large hand-blown Murano glass elements with chrome-plated metal fittings to create an imposing illuminated glass sculpture. The body consists of three substantial molded glass sections featuring dramatic white swirling decoration within the clear glass. These are stacked vertically and separated by polished chrome-plated fittings. Above them sits an impressive spherical hand-blown glass globe distinguished by a broad white decorative band and characteristic bubbles and irregularities within the glass. The lamp contains multiple internal light sources. When illuminated, the light travels through the substantial glass elements, revealing the depth and movement of the white decoration and producing a dramatic atmospheric glow throughout the structure. The sculptural stacked composition, generous scale and combination of Murano glass and chrome embody the experimental character of Italian lighting design during the Space Age period. The lamp has been carefully refurbished and newly rewired, while its original vintage character has been preserved. It accommodates 7 E26/E27 bulbs and is compatible with US and European electrical systems.
