Kunduz Afghan carpet

Turkmen Afghan carpet, Kunduz, circa 1950. Afghanistan, Kunduz region. Dimensions: 254 × 157 cm. Technique: hand-knotted, wool on wool. An antique Kunduz-type carpet, knotted in the 1950s, featuring a traditional Turkmen structure. Dense wool pile, deep garnet palette with Ersari geometric patterns. The knotting is asymmetrical, fine, and regular (approx. 55–80 knots/cm²), attesting to the careful work of workshops in northern Afghanistan before later industrial productions. The design, composed of stylised guls arranged in columns, is perfectly legible on both the front and back. The multiple borders and the patina of the pile confirm the age and quality of the piece. Overall good condition for a carpet of this period. (See photos).
