Decorative Carved Wood Guro Helmet Mask – Ivory Coast, 35 cm

Superb carved wooden guro helmet mask, measuring 35 cm in height, from ivory coast. This mask, with its imposing carved headdress and expressive face, is inspired by the artistic traditions of the guro people. However, it does not appear to have been used in rituals. It could simply be a decorative object, inspired by traditional masks, but never worn for ceremonies. Indeed, the opening does not allow it to be put on the head. Alternatively, this mask could have been used as a crest mask, placed above the head and attached to a costume, as seen in certain african dances. The face has traditional scarifications, a refined expression and a beautiful old patina. The very elaborate headdress is reminiscent of traditional african styles. Estimated period: probably mid-20th century (1950-1970), given the natural patina and wear of the wood. Condition: beautiful patina of use with some visible chips and cracks, especially on the back and edges of the headdress. These marks confirm the age of the piece.
