Piet Hein & Bruno Mathsson ‘Superellipse’ coffee table, Fritz Hansen, Denmark 1968. A very rare low coffee table version of the iconic Superellipse table, designed by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson and manufactured by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The table features the characteristic Superellipse-shaped top, combining the visual softness of an oval with the balanced proportions of a rectangular form. Executed in beautifully figured rosewood, the tabletop displays a particularly rich and expressive grain with warm variations in colour throughout. The top rests on the distinctive slender chromed steel legs, each composed of multiple rods that elegantly converge towards the floor. Their light and sculptural construction creates an attractive contrast with the warm and richly grained rosewood top. While the Superellipse design is well known as a dining or conference table, this low coffee table version is considerably rarer, making it a particularly interesting example of this celebrated design. The table remains in excellent condition. The rosewood top has been professionally refinished, bringing back the depth, warmth and beautiful natural grain of the wood, while preserving the character of the original piece. The chromed metal legs are also in very good condition, with only minimal signs of age and use. The table is originally marked underneath with the Piet Hein / Fritz Hansen stamp and manufacturer’s label, confirming its authenticity and Danish production. A rare and highly decorative example of Scandinavian modern design, combining one of the most recognizable table shapes of the period with exceptional rosewood and the elegant, lightweight construction characteristic of Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson’s Superellipse series.
