A vase designed by Jerzy Słuczan-Orkusz for the Krakow Glass Institute in the 1970s showcases the characteristic approach to form and colour of that decade. The body is made of thick, high-quality coloured glass, with a smooth gradation from deep ruby red at the top to saturated amber-orange at the base. The surface is decorated with vertical, convex grooves that give the structure a subtle three-dimensionality and bring out the light refracting on the shiny glass. The whole has a bulbous shape, a distinct short neck and a wide, flared opening, reminiscent of organic, almost floral inspirations. The proportions are harmonious, the shapes regular, and the final effect testifies to the precision of workmanship and the high quality of glassmaking craftsmanship. The vase shows no signs of damage or repair – condition is very good. The colourful form of this vase speaks the language of the 1970s, when experimentation with colour and plasticity was of particular importance. It is a voice of an era that sought both expression and freedom in glass – in the juicy gradient of colours one can find the spirit of dynamic changes and optimism of the design studios of the time. The distinct, tactile ribbing leads the light like sun streaks on the water's surface, and the flowing form invites the eye to linger. The vase becomes a silent witness to the creative momentum of Krakow glass design: it speaks of the courage of combining colours and forms, of decorativeness that needs no additional embellishments. It can be displayed on a natural wood console or a minimalist shelf, where it will play the role of the central point of the composition. It is worth combining it with simple ceramics in subdued colours or a single large leaf with a sculptural shape. It will fit well in mid-century modern interiors as well as in more eclectic collector's spaces – its colour scheme harmonises with natural light, allowing for the effect of a changing, luminous sculpture against neutral walls.
