Antique Japanese commode of the Isho-Dansu type made from paulownia (kiri), dating from the late Meiji period to the early Taishō period, around 1890–1920. This type of furniture was traditionally used for storing clothes and textiles in Japanese homes. The piece features the characteristic structure of isho-dansu, with large horizontal drawers for clothing and a side column of small drawers intended for accessories or personal items. It is constructed from paulownia (kiri), a lightweight wood particularly valued in Japan for textile preservation due to its natural resistance to moisture. The structure is reinforced with traditional iron fittings (kanagu). The furniture retains a dark and deep patina developed over time, with signs of use that testify to its history. With its balanced proportions and understated aesthetic, this tansu easily integrates into contemporary interiors while bringing a strong presence related to Japanese craftsmanship. Details.
