This ancient painted pine chest features a rectangular structure with a drop lid, wrought iron hinges and lock, and a central pictorial panel depicting three female figures in a court scene, framed by floral friezes. It originates from northern China, dating from the end of the Qing dynasty, where the pine was crafted using a mortise and tenon assembly and finished with polychrome paint on a natural lacquer background. In traditional Chinese furniture, painted chests were part of a trousseau — they formed part of the bridal dowry — and contained textiles, festive clothing, documents, and personal items. The painted decoration on the front, sides, and lid was a statement of domestic prosperity and a vehicle for auspicious family symbolism. The body is made of solid pine. The structure is a closed rectangular volume with a drop lid mounted on wrought iron hinges, with a central lock also made of iron. The assembly is mortise and tenon on an internal frame, and the sides finish with a small lower moulding. The interior retains the raw pine, while the exterior is fully painted. The front panel features an exceptional figurative scene: three female figures in traditional clothing under an ornate canopy, one seated with a musical instrument and two standing, set against an architectural interior background. The scene belongs to the repertoire of Chinese court iconography and is associated with feminine virtues, marital harmony, and domestic prosperity. The palette combines reds, greens, pinks, and cobalt blue on a dark background, with peripheral floral friezes and auspicious motifs in vases. Due to its compact size — approximately 85-90 cm in length — this chest functions as a bedside table, accent table, or central decorative piece in an entryway. It fits into wabi-sabi, contemporary rustic, Japandi, and Asian-inspired interiors, where it adds a historical and narrative accent. Details: Dimensions: Length 85 cm – Depth 55 cm – Height 58 cm.
