Antique chest painted in pine wood – China, around 1900

This ancient chest, painted in pine wood, features a painted composition with three female figures on the front panel and a continuous floral frieze around all the edges, set against a dark background. The lid opens with top hinges. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was worked using a traditional mortise and tenon assembly. In traditional Chinese furniture, painted chests with drop-down lids were part of the domestic trousseau and contained textiles, festive clothing, and personal items inside. Figurative compositions depicting court life or mythological scenes were common on the most carefully crafted pieces, associated with wishes for marital harmony, longevity, and domestic prosperity. The body is constructed from solid pine. The structure is a rectangular volume closed with a drop-down lid, assembled using mortise and tenon joints on an internal frame. The front hinge and closure are made of wrought iron. The interior retains the raw pine, while the exterior is fully painted. The painted front panel displays a composition of three female figures in traditional clothing, set against a landscape background with vegetation, accompanied by a Chinese ideogram. This scene is framed by a continuous floral frieze with plant motifs in reds, golds, and greens on a dark background.
