Composition, 2003. Oil on panel. Signed and dated bottom right. Monogrammed and dated top left. 20 X 32 cm. Framed. Very good condition. Trio, circa 1960. Oil on paper unsigned. 24 X 30 cm. Framed. Very good condition. He is a French engineer of Russian origin, graduated from ESPCI Paris - class of '70, who transitioned to painting. He is noted in the field of mathematical art. The magazine Tangente (no. 23, 2005) mentions him, and the blog Cuaderno de Cultura Científica presents him as: "retired engineer and French painter of Russian origin, whose art is deeply linked to mathematics." His most reproduced work is Pythagore 2. He sometimes signs under the artist name SMAAB and exhibits in the southwest of France, particularly in Labarthe-Rivière. • Technique: very fluid oil on wood panel, close to ink or lacquer, with a technique involving drips, blowing, and marbling. The black "flowers" are created by allowing ink to diffuse in a wet medium. It is a controlled random technique. • Composition: lyrical abstraction cut by a very rigorous geometric structure - here a 6-pointed star that divides the surface into flat areas of yellow, violet, cyan blue, and orange. He is interested in the bridge between geometry and chance: mathematics structures the chaos of matter. • Palette: very saturated, complementary violet/yellow and blue/orange, typical of his period.
