Gilbert Swimberghe, Geometric Abstract Composition 1997

Geometric abstract composition by Belgian artist Gilbert Swimberghe , Belgium, 1997, executed in oil on paper mounted on board. Since the 1950s, Swimberghe developed a highly recognisable abstract language built around recurring geometric forms, particularly triangles and squares, positioned between Belgian geometric abstraction and lyrical abstraction. Layered diagonal brushstrokes partially veil the underlying composition, allowing earlier forms to remain visible beneath the deep blue surface. Signed and dated 1997. Preserved in overall good condition with minor surface marks consistent with age. A strong late work within post-war Belgian abstract art.
