Dimensions: H 2.1 X W 12 X D 9 cm, pocket emptier: 7.4 X 7.4 cm Verlys glassworks contraction of "VERrerie des AndeLYS" Created in 1925, from the Holophane company, founded in 1921 in Les Andelys, in Eure, in Normandy. Originally, Holophane specialized in the manufacture of optical glass and lenses for lighting, particularly for lighthouses and beacons. To diversify its activities, Holophane then created an artistic department dedicated to the production of art glassware under the Verlys brand, contraction of "VERrerie des AndeLYS". Between 1925 and 1946, Verlys distinguished itself by creating several hundred models of vases, bowls, decorative objects, animal and religious subjects, mainly in pressed-molded glass. These pieces, often signed and referenced in catalogs, are characterized by their great diversity of shapes, decorations and colors. Verlys quickly established itself as a major player in Art Deco, exhibiting alongside big names such as Lalique, Etling or Sabino, and attracting famous glassmakers and designers. Despite artistic recognition, Verlys production remained unprofitable for Holophane. In 1946, the manufacture of art objects was abandoned in favor of the industrial production of headlight glass and optical components. The Holophane company, for its part, continued its industrial development until its liquidation in 2024. Today, the Verlys brand remains a symbol of 20th century French glassmaking expertise, prized by Art Deco enthusiasts.
