A rectangular commode with a slight central projection, opening with five drawers in three rows. The two lower drawers have no visible crossbars and are decorated on either side with marquetry of bottomless cubes and, in the center, with marquetry of quatrefoils, all surrounded by borders with geometric motifs. The sides repeat the same cube decoration. The apron is shaped and embellished with a gilt-bronze finial. The three drawers in the upper section open with small rings. The rounded, canted uprights are adorned with gilt-bronze mounts decorated with ram's heads and are inlaid to simulate wide fluting. The four cabriole legs are fitted with gilt-bronze sabots in the shape of lion's paws; the edges are concealed by stylized reeds. The commode has a very fine, thick (3.8 cm) molded, veined white marble top with a shaped, molded design. Circa 1900. A chest of drawers by Simon Oeben (1722-1786) of a similar design is kept at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lyon.
